Resilience + Recovery // Re-Engineering The Way You Work

Across the sector that we are privileged to support, many museums and cultural institutions throughout the world have closed their doors to the public following the implementation of preventive and precautionary measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Some fear that the lockdown will be a fatal blow to our sector, while others acknowledge that, at the very least, it will cause major disruption.

Either way, the impact of the crisis should not be underestimated.

For many, this emerging and largely unpredictable context is generating a degree of anxiety about how to act in the short, medium and long term and causing museums and cultural institutions around the world to think swiftly, and rightly so, about what pathways they should be taking to successfully navigate the new realities we all face.

Now is the time to assess, anticipate and act.

Now, more than ever, organisations are in need of reliable and robust strategies to enable them to continue to operate in the new paradigm. Last year, we at Barker Langham Recruitment contributed a chapter entitled “Re-Engineering The Way You Work” to the latest publication from MuseumsEtc in which we proposed a number of new practices that would transform the conditions of work for employees, both now and for the future, which has become particularly relevant in the current context.

As an expression of our support for the cultural sector and the challenges it is facing, Barker Langham Recruitment has compiled a one-pager of best-practice guidance for remote working. It answers the following key questions:

1. How can we rapidly equip our staff with remote working skills?

2. What are the transformative possibilities of remote working?

3. How can we ensure that our employee’s wellbeing is maintained?

4. How will this impact the performance of our team?

5. How will our organisation's mission, vision and values be upheld?

6. What is the positive impact of a long term move to remote working?

This summary is an introduction to a number of resources we are producing called “Resilience + Recovery” that are designed to help you to determine what you should be doing to ensure that your staff have the necessary tools and work-practices that will be essential to staying productive in the short-term, and the strategies that will deliver positive results in the long-term.
